Huhsien County Peasant Paintings from the People's Republic of China

In 1958, for the first time, untrained farmers began to paint in China. With no sense of obligation to the aristocratic art of China's past, the peasant painters of Huhsien County set out simply to make pictures of their daily lives with bright color and bold design. Their efforts have been received enthusiastically all over the world. 2,000,000 people saw the first major exhibition of the works in Peking in 1973 and the reviews for the 80 gouaches sent by China to the '74 Paris Biennial applauded the new, daring and unofficial style of the paintings.

These are the first woodblock prints made from the Huhsien paintings. The trademark flat color design of the paintings are perfectly suited to the woodblock, and the pictures loose none of their validity and power in the translation from one medium to another.

Each woodblock print commissioned, has been pulled in a special edition and is authenticated by the seal of the artist. You may use our convenient order form, to request a color flyer. These splendid woodblock prints are priced from $150 to $300. Call us for price quotes to place an order at: 203-438-4716 or E-mail us at: hirschfeld@georgejgoodstadt.com
